LOS REALEJOS
Los Realejos (pop. 32,588) is under the shade of the great slopes of the Las Cañadas del Teide mountain range. During the last few years this town has grown in importance and population. It is mainly agricultural surrounded by great banana plantations; even though today it has become a tourist extension of Puerto de la Cruz and thus, one can find many hotels and first-class residential quarters. La Concepción Church has got a magnificent Baroque Altar and a jasper sculptured Baptismal font. In Los Realejos one also finds the oldest Island's Church - the Santiago Parish - constructed in 1498. On its coast there is a beautiful black-sand beach - El Socorro - and landscapes of exuberant beauty surround the whole city, among which one can highlight the already mentioned Rambla de Castro (Castro's Avenue).

Spring temperatures dominate throughout the year. The average lies between 20-22ºC. During the cooler days the thermometer doesn't fall under 15ºC and rarely gets higher than 30ºC on the hotter days.
Even though the West African coast, with it's dry and hot climate, is only a few kilometers away, the Canaries experience spring like temperatures the whole year. We can connect the balanced climate specially to the Passat winds coming from Northeast and the cold sea current from the North of the Canaries. Because of this stream, the temperatures sink in summer and during the winter the climate remains mild. But determinant factors for this climate are the Passat winds (Vientos Alisios).
The capital of Tenerife is the second most populated city of the Islands with more than 200,000 inhabitants. Its present importance comes from the development of its port and its commercial calling which made it progressively absorb the civic centres of La Laguna until it reached the status of capital at the beginning of the last century.
Its greatest development was originated by the decree of free ports in 1852 when the consequent intense commercial traffic contributed to the progress of a middle class intent on making the city grow. Today, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a city with large landscaped areas which preserves the carm of the modernist architecture. Its treelined avenues, parks and squares are ideal for strolling because the green of Santa Cruz complements its peacefulness and the sunny climate which it enjoys all year. For a few years the city has also had a maritime park designed by Cesar Manrique, where the old trade docks are used for recreation.
